Lent – A Time for Self-Examination
Many Christians across this country and around the world will celebrate the season
of Lent which begins on Wednesday, March 5.
Malakoff FUMC will begin the Season with our traditional “Service of Ashes”
that evening at 5:30.
Some may be wondering what Lent is…
Lent is one of the oldest observances of the Christian faith.
Early church Father Irenaus of Lyons (c. 130-c200) wroteof such a season in the earliest days of the church, but then it lasted only two or three days-not the 40
observed today. The 40 days of fasting was established by
the Council of Nicea in 325 c.e. but it is unclear whether its
original intent was just for new Christians preparing for Baptism.
The purpose has always been self-examination
and penitence, demonstrated by self-denial, in preparation for Easter.
“The Cross and Beyond” will be our theme this year for the season of Lent.
Come on Wednesday, February 22 as we begin our journey to “The Cross and Beyond”
& prepare ourselves for Resurrection Sunday.
